In quite a shocking development, a security guard has been alleged to be involved in sexual harassment of other female security personnel at National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela as students of institute resorted to severe protests inside the premises on Wednesday.
The accused identified as Balaram Champatiray was allegedly involved in forcible sexual relationships with some other female security personnel in the institute, alleged distressed students who created massive protests asking for immediate ban of Champatiray from the campus.
“If female security guards are not safe then how can we be safe,” said a student. Meanwhile, students claim that they have enough evidence, video footages, photo clips to prove that Champatiray was guilty but after complaints since he is yet to be apprehended and amid laxness in actions on the part of NIT administration, the students created stir.
Meanwhile, when asked about the severe allegations, Professor Sunil Sarangi, NIT Director said, “Steps are being taken with appropriate measures to be ensured so that Champatiray is not allowed inside the premises. After proper investigations by the fact finding team further actions will be taken.”
It is quite extraordinary and a matter of great shame that an engineering-technology institution of such repute in national level such incidents of woman harassment does occur. It is actually very unfortunate as the incident came into limelight when the situation is not at all good in the institute amid talks that the long term serving Director Sarangi might be replaced very soon who has moulded the institute to a big brand, intellectuals said.
